Civil, Environmental Department Receives
Diversity Enhancement Award

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic
Science received the University Distinguished Diversity Enhancement
Award for 2005.
The award recognized individuals or groups who have demonstrated a
significant commitment to enhancing diversity at the university and to
exceeding expectations in implementing the Diversity Action Plan.
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic
Science has developed a 10-year strategic plan that incorporates
diversity at every level and creates a culture that enthusiastically
supports groups that are traditionally underrepresented in the
engineering disciplines.
The departmetn has been unusually sensitive to family and child-
rearing issues and supportive of dual career issues. Collectively, these
actions have significantly changed the culture of the department,
dramatically improving the work environment for women. The process
of seeking women faclty candidates and providing a climate of
includion and support in order to retain them has proven invaluable.
