2006 Mapping & GIS Lab Awards go to Deshpande and Yan

The Mapping & GIS Laboratory at The Ohio State University is proud to announce the recipients of the 2006 Lab Award, Mr. Lin Yan and Mr. Sagar Deshpande, who are both Ph.D. students in geodetic science and photogrammetry.

Lin has been working on a research project to develop a new stereo multi-perspective line-scan panoramic camera system. Lin successfully finished the integration of all the components and fully tested the system’s functionalities over the past year. In the past one and a half years, Lin has been the person that maintains the “Marsmapper” software that was developed by the Mars team in Mapping and GIS Lab. This software was developed for the Mars Exploration Rover 2003 mission to perform localization of the two Mars rovers during their travels on Mars and to produce very high precision mapping of Mars. Besides normal maintenance, he developed several modules to expand Marsmapper’s functions in order to meet new, demanding requirements from various scientific research groups on this Mars Mission.

Sagar made significant impacts on a number of important Lab activities. He developed a new website for the Lab’s coastal research project funded by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, worked on developing new visualization software for coastline mapping, helped the Mars team during their GPS survey test runs in preparation for a January field test in Silver Lake, CA, and served as assistant to the Assistant Editor for a special edition of the professional journal Marine Geodesy. In addition he served as senior mentor to the Lab’s many master’s students, helping them with coursework and research technology.

Dr. Li is extremely proud of the efforts of students, which have made significant contributions to the success of his many coastal and Mars projects.
