| Lab Student wins ISPRS Best Young Author Award Yunhang Chen, a master's student at the GIS & Mapping Lab, has won one of the prestigeous Best Papers by Young Authors awards conferred by ISPRS, the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing . This award is designated for papers on Space Science or Real-time Photogrammetry, which was established by Dr. Sherman Wu. The award, given for his paper “Bundle Adjustment of Mars HiRISE Stereo Images Based on Rigorous Sensor Model”, consists of a check for Swiss Francs 2500 and a certificate. It will be presented at the annual ISPRS Congress being held June 30 to July 3, 2008 in Beijing, China, where Yunhang will present his paper. |

Ron Li Receives Innovators Award Professor Ron Li has been awarded the 2008 Innovators Award. The award is presented each year to an individual or team of faculty and/or research scientists who best demonstrate innovation in the development of a product and/or technology originating from the OSU research enterprise. The innovative software system, MarsMapper, developed by Professor Ron Li and his OSU team have gained a tremendous reputation during the four years of mission operations of NASA's Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, by supporting precision navigation, winter haven selection, ingress/egress of Mars craters, and other mission critical tasks. |

Ron Li Receives Lumley Research Award Professor Ron Li along with professors Dorota Brzezinska and Charles Toth are the 2008 recipients of the Lumley Research Award. This award is to recognize faculty and research scientists on the basis of their research accomplishments during their last five years at The Ohio State University. Five categories of information are provided in the committee evaluation that include their research program and contribution, publications, thesis and dissertations, a listing of their research grants, and other auxiliary information related to their research. |

Lunar Astronaut
Spatial Orientation Research Funded The Lab has received major funding for a NASA NSBRI (National Space Biomedical Research Institute) project "Enhancement of Spatial Orientation Capability of Astronauts on the Lunar Surface". This project represents a collaboration between the OSU Mapping & GIS Lab, the OSU Photogrammetric Computer Vision Lab, the BANKSLAB at UC Berkeley, the Man Vehicle Laboratory at MIT, and the NASA Glenn Research Center. Ron Li Chosen as Participating Scientist of New Lunar Mission Dr. Li has been selected to serve as a Participating Scientist for NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter mission. Dr. Kaichang Di is Co-I. The proposal, “Integration of Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) and Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) Data for Precision Lunar Topographic Mapping and Landing Sites Assessment”, proposes to integrate Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) and Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) data to provide the first highly accurate 3-D lunar cartographic maps. These maps are particularly important for the assessment of lunar surface features as possible landing sites for future lunar landed missions. |

Jr. Award On November 21, the 2007 Duane Brown Junior Award was awarded to Dr. Xutong Niu. The Duane C. Brown Junior Award was established to “promote and stimulate scientific activity in photogrammetry” at The Ohio State University. Annually, on the Eve of Thanksgiving Day, an award is made to a talented enthusiastic and devoted student, teaching or research associate who has had particular interest in photogrammetry at the University. |

| Sept 2007 | Welcome Dr. Chun Liu The Lab is very happy to welcome Dr. Chun Liu as visiting scholar to the Mapping & GIS Lab. Dr. Liu is an associate professor at Tongji University, China. He has received a scholarship from the China Scholarship Council for 1 year to pursue research in photogrammetry and remote sensiong, focusing on LIDAR feature extraction and its integraiton with high-resolution satellite images as well as construction of 3-D models. |
| Farewell to Rebecca Rebecca Greenberger, an undergraduate student majoring in Earth and Planetary Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, has returned to Washington University after working at the Lab over the summer on a special Mars research project. Working under the direction of Dr. Ray Arvidson, Deputy PI of the Mars Exploration Rover mission, she analyzed traverse data for the Mars Spirit rover in addition to other assignments. Working under the direction of Dr. Ray Arvidson, she will be analyzing traverse data for the Mars Spirit rover in addition to other assignments. Rebecca is a graduate of Columbus School for Girls. |

Instrument, Inc. Acquire 3-D Targeting Information for New Mars Camera Calibration Adam W. Long of EMH&T and Shawn Spencer of Precision Laser & Instrument, Inc. spent a day recently at the new Camera Calibration Facility in Hitchcock Hall, volunteering their time and use of their highly accurate robotic total system to help establish this new Facility. Under the direction of Dr. Ron Li, the Mapping and GIS Lab is developing a camera system that would potentialy be used for Mars robotic exploration. |
