Attendees:

OSU Mapping & GIS Lab: Xutong Niu
OSU Center for Mapping: Alok Srivastava
OSU Geodesy Lab: Chung-yen Kuo
Great Lakes Forecasting System Laboratory: Vasilia Velissariou
SUNY at Buffalo: Xian Xu (reported by E-mail)

Summary:

Vasilia Velissariou reported that she was worked on the MAROBS data, searching for the years between 1982 and 1990. Currently, she has obtained data from Dr. Schwab. However, the data format is different from data she has previously used. She is working on how to convert this data to the format she needs for the hindcast water surface model.

Alok Srivastava is working on georeferencing the aerial photos of Painesville taken in 1990. In the photos, there are bluff lines for 1973 and 1990. These two shorelines will be used for the shoreline prediction model. He also added a geocoding function and dynamic layer display into the system. But there is no parcel address information in the parcel layer. He has also been working with Dr. Bedford on the water surface prediction.

Chung-yen compared the altimetry and gauge station observations for Tampa Bay based on water level variations. The results and method description are in Appendix A.

Xutong Niu finished the DEM and orthophoto generation for Tampa Bay based on aerial photos and QuickBird Imagery. He also helped Alok finish the dynamic layer display for the shoreline erosion awareness system.

Xian Xu reported by E-mail that he has finished a small 3D visualization application based on Java3D and Web Services. The DEM data on the remote server can be requested from and sent over to the 3D visualization software. Additional data, such as shorelines, orthophotos, and water surfaces, will be added in the application based on web services.

Appendix A: Comparison between Tide-Gauge and Topex/Poseidon Altimetric Observations

 Calculate steps:

  1. Tide-Gauge Data:
Tide Gauge Data used in the calculation are the monthly averages from the observations in Clearwater Beach station, from 1996 to 2003.
    1. First, the mean of the TG observations from 1996 to 2003 is calculated.
    2. Second, the mean of the TG is subtracted from all the monthly averages.
    3. Third, plot the calculated differences in the figure.
  1. Altimetric Data:
Altimetric Data used in the calculation are T/P data acquired at Gulf of Mexico from 1996 to 2003. These data are from the altimetric bins located inside the circle center around Clearwater Beach with 4 degree radius.
    1. First the mean of each bin was calculated based on cycle 4 - cycle 142 observations.
    2. Within each month, there are about 3 cycles of T/P observation. For each bin with one month, we can three elevation differences by subtracting the mean from the observation of each cycle. Average these three elevation differences, we can get monthly elevation difference for each bin.
    3. Average monthly elevation differences for all the bins in the circle, we can get monthly water level variation in the Gulf of Mexico, which is shown in the figure.
