Teachers Kelli Leinbaugh and Kelly Tederous worked with the staff at the Mapping & GIS Laboratory at The Ohio State University to present a number of activities demonstrating some of the science of the Mars Exploration Rover (or MER) mission.

The director of the Lab, Dr. Ron Li, a professor of Geodetic Science at The Ohio State University, is a Participating Scientist of the MER 2003 mission. He is very interested in explaining what he does to map Mars and determine a precise location for each Mars rover, Spirit and Opportunity. Today we explored the methods of photogrammetry and remote sensing, two major parts of geodetic science, are being used by the Spirit and Opportunity rovers to precisely map Mars.
